Numbers 32:12

Saue Caleb the sonne of Iephunneh the Kenezite, and Ioshua the sonne of Nun: for they haue wholly followed the Lord. Numbers 32:12 (KJV)

Context: The book of Numbers records the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. In Numbers 32 the people are on the east side of the Jordan River, preparing to enter Canaan. The tribes of Reuben and Gad, together with half the tribe of Manasseh, see that the land they occupy is suitable for their livestock and ask Moses to settle there instead of crossing the Jordan with the rest of Israel.

Faithful Servants: In Numbers 14:24 Moses acknowledges Caleb and Joshua for their faithfulness to the Lord. They were two of the twelve spies sent to explore the Promised Land (Numbers 13). While the other ten spies returned with a fearful, negative report, Caleb and Joshua remained steadfast in trust that the Lord would give them victory over the inhabitants of the land.

Wholly Following the Lord: The key phrase “they have wholly followed the LORD” describes their complete devotion and obedience. Their faith was not merely verbal; it was evident in their actions. They trusted God’s guidance, relied on His strength, and did not waver even when faced with opposition or difficulty.

The Blessing of Faithfulness: God recognized and rewarded their faithfulness. While the rest of the nation wandered forty years in the wilderness, Caleb and Joshua entered the Promised Land. Their obedience positioned them to receive the blessings God had prepared for His people. Likewise, when we remain faithful, God honors our obedience and blesses us in various ways.

Application: Reflect on your own life and ask whether you are wholly following the Lord. Identify areas where greater trust and obedience are needed. Seek to imitate the faithfulness of Caleb and Joshua, relying on God’s promises and living a life dedicated to Him.
