Numbers 33:1

Posted on 4 March 2024
Listen to this article

“These are the journeys of the children of Israel, which went forth out of the land of Egypt with their armies under the hand of Moses and Aaron.”

Numbers 33:1 serves as an introduction to the subsequent chapter, which lists the various stages of Israel’s journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. This chapter records the forty-two different locations where the Israelites camped during their wilderness wanderings.

Context:The book of Numbers is primarily concerned with recounting the events that took place during the Israelites’ journey from Mount Sinai to the borders of the Promised Land. It contains historical accounts, laws, and regulations given by God to the Israelites through Moses. The passage in question appears in the latter part of the book.

The journeys of the children of Israel:The verse begins by stating that it is an account of the journeys of the children of Israel. These journeys refer to the specific movements and encampments of the Israelites as they traveled from Egypt to the land God promised to give them.

Went forth out of the land of Egypt:This phrase reminds us of the significant event of the Exodus, when God delivered the Israelites from their slavery in Egypt. It highlights the starting point of their journey toward the Promised Land, marking the transition from slavery to freedom.

With their armies:The Israelites were not a disorganized multitude, but a well-structured people with military organisation. This phrase emphasises that they left Egypt in an orderly manner, organised into military divisions or groups, ready to face any challenges that might come their way.

Under the hand of Moses and Aaron:Moses and Aaron were the leaders appointed by God to guide the Israelites out of Egypt and through the wilderness. They played significant roles in the liberation of the Israelites from Egypt and acted as God’s intermediaries in delivering His messages and instructions to the people.

Overall, Numbers 33:1 provides an overview of the historical context, highlighting the specific stages of the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the Promised Land. It acknowledges the leadership of Moses and Aaron and the organised manner in which the Israelites departed Egypt. The subsequent verses in Numbers 33 go on to provide a detailed account of each location where the Israelites camped during their wilderness wanderings, which serves as a historical record of their journey and a testament to God’s faithfulness in guiding and providing for His people throughout their sojourn.
