Numbers 32:42
And Nobah went and tooke Kenath, and the villages thereof, and called it Nobah, after his owne name. Numbers 32:42 (KJV)
Historical Context: Numbers 32:42 is part of the account of the Israelites’ settlement of the eastern side of the Jordan River. The tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh requested to settle on the eastern side of the Jordan River instead of crossing over to the western side with the rest of Israel. Moses granted their request on the condition that they assist their fellow Israelites in the conquest of Canaan before settling in their allotted territories. This verse records an event that occurred as the eastern tribes began to take possession of their allotted lands.
Nobah and Kenath: Nobah, a leader of the half‑tribe of Manasseh, captured the city of Kenath and its surrounding villages, renaming the city after himself. This act demonstrated his authority and the tribe’s claim to the land. Kenath was situated in the region of Gilead, which lies in present‑day Jordan.
