Numbers 32:40

And Moses gaue Gilead vnto Machir the sonne of Manasseh, and he dwelt therein. Numbers 32:40 (KJV)

The book of Numbers records the Israelites’ journey from Egypt toward the Promised Land. In this passage the people are nearing the end of their forty years of wandering and are preparing to enter the land that God had promised to give them.

The land of Gilead was a region east of the Jordan River, noted for its fertility and suitability for raising livestock. It formed part of the inheritance that God had promised to the Israelites and was one of the territories assigned to the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of the tribe of Manasseh.

In this verse we see Moses acting as the mediator between God and the people, allocating the land according to divine instruction. He gave Gilead specifically to Machir, the son of Manasseh, thereby confirming the particular allotment within the broader tribal distribution.

The tribe of Manasseh received a double portion of land because of the blessing given to Joseph by Jacob (Genesis 48:22). Consequently, the descendants of Manasseh possessed territory both east and west of the Jordan River, reflecting the special favor associated with Joseph’s lineage.

The passage underscores the importance of faithful stewardship. By entrusting Gilead to Machir, Moses placed upon him the responsibility to cultivate and care for the land as a faithful steward of God’s blessing.

Application for believers today is clear: just as the Israelites were given a promised physical inheritance, Christians have received spiritual blessings and promises in Christ (Ephesians 1:3). We are called to be diligent stewards of the gifts, talents, and resources God has entrusted to us, using them for His glory and the benefit of others.

In conclusion, Numbers 32:40 highlights Moses’ role in allocating Gilead to Machir, son of Manasseh, and reminds us of the responsibility that accompanies every divine inheritance. Faithful stewardship of what God gives is a timeless principle for every generation.
