Numbers 32:39
And the children of Machir the son of Manasseh went to Gilead, and took it, and dispossessed the Amorite which was in it.
Numbers 32:39 (KJV)
Context
Numbers 32:39 appears in the account of Israel’s journey from Egypt toward the Promised Land. The people were camped east of the Jordan River, preparing to cross into Canaan. The tribes of Reuben and Gad, along with the half-tribe of Manasseh, owned large herds and flocks, so they asked to settle in the land of Gilead. Moses granted their request on the condition that they first help the other tribes conquer Canaan (Numbers 32:1-33).
Meaning
The verse focuses on the children of Machir, a prominent clan within the tribe of Manasseh. Machir’s descendants were known for bravery and military skill. They went to Gilead, captured it, and dispossessed the Amorites who lived there. This was not merely a territorial gain; it fulfilled the commitment they had made to assist in securing the land. The following verse records that Moses gave Gilead to the Machirites, and they settled there (Numbers 32:40).
Biblical connections
The conquest of Gilead illustrates the faithfulness of the Machirites in carrying out their promise. Their action also aligns with God’s command to Israel to possess the land and displace its idolatrous inhabitants. This event connects to the broader biblical theme of inheriting what God has promised through obedient action.
Application
Trusting God’s promises: The children of Machir trusted God’s promise to give Israel the land. They crossed the Jordan, engaged in battle, and claimed Gilead as their inheritance. This teaches us to trust God’s promises and take action accordingly.
Obedience to God’s commands: Israel was called to be a holy nation and to follow God’s instructions. The Machirites obeyed the command to conquer the land and dispossess its inhabitants. As Christians, we are called to obey God’s commandments and live in a way that pleases Him.
Courage and perseverance: The conquest of Gilead required courage and perseverance. The Machirites faced formidable enemies but did not shrink back. In our spiritual journey, we may face challenges and opposition, but with God’s help we can overcome them and claim the promises He has for us.
Inheriting God’s promises: The Machirites inherited Gilead as their possession. In a spiritual sense, this points to the eternal inheritance we have in Christ. Through faith in Jesus, we become children of God and co-heirs with Christ, inheriting the blessings of God’s kingdom.
Reflection
Numbers 32:39 highlights the courageous action of the children of Machir, who conquered Gilead and dispossessed the Amorites. This passage encourages us to trust God’s promises, obey His commands, and persevere in faith, knowing that God is faithful to fulfill His promises and grant us an eternal inheritance.
