Deuteronomy 1:3

Listen to this article

“And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spake unto the children of Israel, according unto all that the LORD had given him in commandment unto them.”

This verse marks the beginning of the book of Deuteronomy, which is the fifth book of the Pentateuch or the Torah. Deuteronomy is primarily attributed to Moses and contains his final speeches to the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land.

Context:The verse provides us with the specific time and situation when Moses addressed the children of Israel. It was in the fortieth year after they left Egypt, which was a significant period of wandering in the wilderness due to their disobedience and lack of faith. The eleventh month of that fortieth year and the first day of the month are mentioned as the specific time when Moses spoke to the people.

Moses’ Address:Moses, in obedience to the commandments he had received from the Lord, spoke to the Israelites. It’s important to note that Moses didn’t deliver a new set of commandments but rather reiterated the laws and instructions that the Lord had previously given them. Moses took this opportunity to remind the Israelites of God’s faithfulness, recount their history, and emphasize the importance of obedience as they prepared to enter the Promised Land.

Lessons and Applications:

  • God’s Timing:The mention of the fortieth year, the eleventh month, and the first day of the month highlights God’s precise timing. It shows that God’s plans and purposes unfold according to His perfect timetable. As we trust in God’s timing, we can find assurance that He is working out His purposes in our lives, even when it may seem like a prolonged journey.
  • Faithfulness in Obedience:Moses faithfully conveyed the commandments and instructions he received from the Lord. This highlights the importance of obedience to God’s Word. Just as Moses faithfully relayed God’s commands, we are called to diligently study and apply God’s Word in our lives, obeying His commandments and seeking His will.
  • Remembrance and Reflection:Moses reminded the Israelites of their history, reminding them of God’s faithfulness and their journey from Egypt to the wilderness. This serves as a lesson for us to remember and reflect on God’s faithfulness in our own lives. Recounting God’s past faithfulness can strengthen our faith and trust in Him as we face challenges and uncertainties.
  • Preparation for the Promised Land:Moses’ address prepared the Israelites for entering the Promised Land. Similarly, we can learn from this verse that before stepping into new seasons or opportunities in our lives, it is essential to seek God’s guidance and follow His commandments. Preparing our hearts and minds through prayer, studying His Word, and relying on His guidance will equip us for the journey ahead.

In summary, Deuteronomy 1:3 provides us with the context of Moses addressing the children of Israel, reiterating God’s commandments to prepare them for entering the Promised Land. This verse reminds us of God’s perfect timing, the importance of obedience, the value of remembering God’s faithfulness, and the need for preparation in our own spiritual journeys.
