Deuteronomy 1:3

And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spake unto the children of Israel, according unto all that the Lord had given him in commandment unto them;

Deuteronomy 1:3 (KJV)

This verse opens the book of Deuteronomy, the fifth book of the Torah, which Moses wrote. It records the exact moment when Moses spoke to the children of Israel: the fortieth year after they left Egypt, on the first day of the eleventh month. That fortieth year marked the end of Israel’s wilderness wandering, a period of judgment for their disobedience and lack of faith. Yet it was also a time of God’s continued care. The precise date shows that God’s plan moved forward deliberately, not by chance.

Moses spoke “according unto all that the LORD had given him in commandment.” This phrase is central. Moses did not invent his message or add his own ideas. He delivered exactly what God commanded, withholding nothing. His words carried divine authority because they came from God. This also sets the tone for Deuteronomy: Moses repeats and explains the law to the new generation that would enter the Promised Land. He was not giving new rules but renewing the covenant with the people.

The timing here connects to the events just before this address. The following verse mentions the defeat of Sihon and Og, kings east of the Jordan. Those victories showed that God had already begun to fulfill His promise to give Israel the land. Moses’ speech came after these triumphs, so the people could look back and see God’s faithfulness. The book of Deuteronomy as a whole is a covenant renewal document, preparing Israel to live in obedience once they entered the land.

God’s timing is precise. The fortieth year, the eleventh month, and the first day are all recorded. This reminds us that God works according to His own timetable, even when our journey feels long. We can trust that He is accomplishing His purposes. Moses’ faithful transmission of God’s commands also teaches us to handle Scripture with care. We are called to study God’s Word and obey it fully, not picking and choosing what suits us. Just as Moses reminded Israel of their history, we should remember God’s past faithfulness in our own lives. Recounting His works strengthens our trust for the future.

Before entering new seasons, we should prepare our hearts through prayer and obedience. Moses prepared Israel for the Promised Land by reminding them of God’s law. In the same way, seeking God’s guidance and following His commandments equips us for the challenges ahead. The verse calls us to faithful communication of God’s truth and complete obedience to His will.

Consider how God has led you through your own wilderness seasons. His timing may seem slow, but it is never late. Moses spoke all that God commanded, and we are called to do the same in our words and actions. Let this verse encourage you to trust God’s perfect plan, obey His Word completely, and remember His faithfulness as you move toward the promises He has for you.
