Deuteronomy 1:5

On this side Jordan, in the land of Moab, began Moses to declare this law, saying,

Deuteronomy 1:5 (KJV)

Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Old Testament. It records Moses’ final words to the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land. The book contains Moses’ speeches, a restatement of the law, and instructions for living as God’s chosen people. This verse sets the stage for the entire book. It shows that Moses spoke deliberately, not casually, as he prepared the people for a new chapter in their history.

This verse places the setting in the land of Moab, on the east side of the Jordan River. This was Israel’s last camp before crossing into Canaan, marking the end of their wilderness journey. The Hebrew word translated “declare” means to make clear or explain, not merely to recite. Moses was not just repeating words; he was teaching the law so the people could understand and obey it. The location in Moab is significant. It is a transitional place, between the wilderness and the inheritance, where God’s people are prepared for what lies ahead. Moses, chosen by God to lead Israel out of Egypt, here serves as the mediator and expositor of God’s law. He declares and explains the statutes and commandments that God had previously given.

Moses served as the mediator between God and Israel. He had led them out of Egypt and through the wilderness. Now he explained the law to the new generation that would enter the land. This act was a deliberate renewal of the covenant, preparing the people for life in Canaan. The book of Deuteronomy is structured as a series of speeches, restating and expanding the law for life in the land. This verse emphasizes the importance of God’s law as the foundation for Israel’s covenant relationship with God and their life in the land.

The law was more than a set of rules. It guided worship, justice, love, and faithfulness. It shaped Israel’s identity as a holy nation, set apart from surrounding cultures. Although the Old Testament law is fulfilled in Christ, its principles remain timeless. We still need to understand and obey God’s Word, remember His faithfulness, and learn from past mistakes. Just as Moses took time to explain the law, we should take time to study Scripture carefully. This helps us know God’s will and live in a way that honors Him.

Moses took time to explain God’s law carefully before the people moved forward. This reminds us that preparation matters. We should not rush into new phases without grounding ourselves in God’s truth. Like Israel, we stand between what God has done and what He has promised. Let us listen to His Word, let it shape our lives, and trust Him for the journey ahead.
