Deuteronomy 5:7

Thou shalt have none other gods before me.

Deuteronomy 5:7 (KJV)

This command opens the Ten Commandments, which God gave to Israel through Moses at Mount Horeb, also called Sinai. Moses repeats the law to the new generation about to enter the Promised Land. The covenant relationship between God and His people begins with this demand for exclusive loyalty. In a world where neighboring nations worshiped many gods, this first command drew a clear line.

The verse commands the exclusive worship of the one true God. It forbids having any other gods “before me,” meaning in His presence or in His sight. This establishes monotheism, the belief in only one God, and rejects polytheism, the worship of many gods, which was common among nearby nations. The phrase “before me” also means God demands first place and undivided loyalty; no rival may take His position. God alone is the true and living God, deserving complete devotion.

This commandment is foundational because it grounds all the others. When Jesus was asked about the greatest commandment, He affirmed the call to love God with all one’s heart, soul, and mind (Matthew 22:37-38). That New Testament teaching echoes the same exclusive devotion required here. The command also implies that no image or false god may be set in God’s sight.

For believers today, this command remains in force. It calls us to examine our hearts for modern idols—material possessions, relationships, status, or even self—that might take God’s rightful place. We are to put God first in every area of life and reject anything that competes with Him for our devotion. This includes not only carved images but also anything we elevate to the status of deity in our daily choices.

This verse is not merely an ancient rule but a timeless call to wholehearted allegiance. It reminds us that God alone is the true and living God, deserving complete devotion. As we seek His will, we grow in faithfulness to the covenant relationship He has established with us. Let this first commandment shape how we order our loves and loyalties each day.
