Listen to this article

“And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.”

Context:Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the Old Testament and is attributed to Moses. It contains Moses’ final speeches to the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land. In this particular verse, Moses emphasises the importance of passing down God’s commandments to future generations.

Teach diligently:The verse begins with the instruction to teach God’s commandments diligently to one’s children. This implies a deliberate and thorough approach to instruction. It highlights the responsibility of parents and older generations to ensure that the younger ones have a solid understanding of God’s laws and principles.

Constant conversation:The verse suggests that teaching God’s commandments should not be limited to formal settings but should be part of everyday life. It mentions various situations-sitting in the house, walking along the way, lying down, and rising up-indicating that teaching should happen continuously, throughout the day, in different contexts.

Comprehensive instruction:The verse implies that God’s commandments should be integrated into every aspect of life. It emphasises the importance of holistic education that encompasses moral, ethical, and spiritual teachings. This approach helps individuals develop a deep understanding and internalise God’s principles in their daily lives.

Oral tradition and generational transfer:In ancient times, written documents were scarce, so oral transmission of knowledge was crucial. By emphasising continuous conversation and teaching, the verse underscores the importance of passing down God’s commandments from one generation to the next. It stresses the responsibility of older generations to ensure the continuity of faith and knowledge.

Application today:Although this verse was specifically addressed to the Israelites, its underlying principles can be applied to believers today. It reminds parents and older generations of their responsibility to teach younger ones about God’s Word and His ways. The emphasis on continuous conversation and comprehensive instruction encourages believers to integrate biblical teachings into all aspects of life.

In summary, Deuteronomy 6:7 instructs parents and older generations to diligently teach God’s commandments to their children. It emphasises the importance of continuous conversation and comprehensive instruction, ensuring that God’s principles are integrated into daily life. This verse underscores the responsibility of passing down faith and knowledge from one generation to the next.
