Deuteronomy 6:22

Listen to this article

“And the LORD shewed signs and wonders, great and sore, upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his household, before our eyes.”

This verse is part of Moses’ recounting of the events that took place during the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt and their journey toward the Promised Land. It highlights the signs and wonders that the Lord performed in Egypt before the eyes of the Israelites.

Context:To better understand the significance of this verse, it’s helpful to provide some context. The book of Deuteronomy is a series of speeches given by Moses to the Israelites just before they entered the land of Canaan. The purpose of these speeches was to remind the people of God’s law and to exhort them to remain faithful to Him.

Deuteronomy 6:In Deuteronomy 6, Moses emphasizes the importance of wholehearted love and devotion to God. He encourages the Israelites to teach God’s commandments diligently to their children and to live by them, so that they may enjoy the blessings of obedience and future generations may continue to walk in God’s ways.

In verse 22, Moses reminds the Israelites of the powerful signs and wonders that the Lord displayed in Egypt. These signs and wonders refer to the ten plagues that God sent upon Egypt to secure the liberation of His people from slavery. Through these miraculous acts, God demonstrated His sovereignty and power over the false gods of Egypt and showed His faithfulness to His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

The phrase “great and sore” in the verse emphasizes the magnitude and severity of the signs and wonders that the Lord performed. It serves as a reminder of the incredible display of divine power witnessed by the Israelites during their time in Egypt. These signs and wonders not only served as a means of liberation but also as a testimony to the Israelites of God’s presence and faithfulness.

Additionally, the phrase “before our eyes” highlights the firsthand experience of the Israelites in witnessing these miracles. They were not stories passed down through generations but actual events witnessed by the Israelites themselves. This personal experience would serve as a foundation for their faith and a reminder of God’s power and provision throughout their journey.

In summary, Deuteronomy 6:22 underscores the significance of the signs and wonders that God performed in Egypt as a testament to His power and faithfulness. It reminds the Israelites of their deliverance from slavery and the importance of passing down this testimony to future generations, so they too might know and serve the Lord. This verse serves as a call to remember God’s works and to remain steadfast in faith and obedience.
