Deuteronomy 7:19

Listen to this article

The great temptations which thine eyes sawe, and the signes and the wonders, and the mightie hand, and the stretched out arme, whereby the Lord thy God brought thee out: so shall the Lord thy God doe vnto all the people of whom thou art afraid. Deuteronomy 7:19 (KJV)

Context and Background: The book of Deuteronomy belongs to the Old Testament and is traditionally attributed to Moses. It records Moses’ final address to the Israelites as they stand on the brink of entering the Promised Land. In this verse Moses reminds the people of the great miracles and deliverance they witnessed during the exodus from Egypt.

The Great Temptations and Miracles: The “great temptations” mentioned are the signs, wonders, the mighty hand, and the outstretched arm that God displayed in Egypt and in the wilderness. They include the plagues, the parting of the Red Sea, the provision of manna and water, and other challenges the people faced on their journey. These events demonstrated God’s power and purpose.

God’s Deliverance and Faithfulness: The passage emphasizes that just as the LORD brought the Israelites out of Egypt with His mighty hand, He will act in the same powerful way against all the peoples whom the Israelites fear. This serves as a clear reminder of God’s unwavering faithfulness and His ability to protect and deliver His people from hostile nations.

Application for Believers:

  • Trust in God’s faithfulness. Because God was faithful to the Israelites, we can rely on His promises and be confident that He will fulfill His word in our lives.
  • Remember God’s past miracles. Reflecting on the miraculous works God performed strengthens our faith during difficult seasons and encourages us to trust Him for present and future circumstances.
  • Seek God’s deliverance. When we encounter trials, challenges, or enemies, we are invited to turn to God, who has the power to overcome any obstacle or opposition.
  • Hold on to hope. The verse assures that God’s deliverance is not confined to a single time or people; He can intervene today, bringing victory and reassurance to those who trust Him.

In summary, Deuteronomy 7:19 calls believers to recall God’s historic acts of salvation, to trust in His steadfast faithfulness, to seek His deliverance in every trial, and to hold fast to the hope that He continues to work powerfully on behalf of His people.
