Deuteronomy 8:6
Therefore thou shalt keep the commandments of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him.
Deuteronomy 8:6 (KJV)
Context
Deuteronomy contains Moses’ final speeches to Israel before they entered the Promised Land. In this verse, Moses reminds the people of their covenant duty to obey God. The word “therefore” connects this command to what God had just done for them in the wilderness, where He tested them and fed them with manna to teach them dependence on His word.
Meaning
The verse begins with the command to “keep the commandments of the LORD thy God.” These commandments are the laws and instructions God gave through Moses, especially in the first five books of the Bible. Keeping them means more than knowing them; it means guarding them carefully and putting them into practice. This obedience is rooted in gratitude for God’s faithful care, not in earning His favor.
The phrase “to walk in his ways” describes a wholehearted commitment to follow God’s path. It involves aligning one’s thoughts, actions, and attitudes with His will, seeking to imitate His character and values. Walking in God’s ways is a daily pattern of life, not a single decision.
The verse also emphasizes the fear of God. In biblical terms, this fear is not terror but deep reverence, respect, and awe for His authority, holiness, and wisdom. This fear leads to a desire to please Him and to avoid anything that would displease Him. It is humble submission to His rightful rule.
Biblical connections
This verse echoes the broader Deuteronomic theme that fearing God and walking in His ways leads to life and blessing. The New Testament affirms that believers are called to walk in good works prepared by God (Ephesians 2:10), which directly connects to the call to walk in God’s ways. While the law cannot save, it still reveals God’s holy standard and His desire for His people to live distinctly.
Application
Although Deuteronomy 8:6 was addressed to Israel, its principles apply to believers today. Christians are called to obey God’s commandments as revealed in the whole Bible, especially the teachings of Jesus Christ. Walking in God’s ways means surrendering our lives to Him, following His guidance, and reflecting His love, mercy, and righteousness in daily conduct.
The fear of God reminds us of His sovereignty and motivates us to honor Him in every area of life. It shapes our decisions, our speech, and our relationships. When we revere God, we grow in wisdom and humility.
Reflection
Consider how the wilderness testing in Deuteronomy 8 teaches dependence on God’s word. Just as Israel learned to trust Him for daily bread, we learn to rely on His provision and guidance. Let this verse lead you to examine your own walk: Are you keeping His commandments with a willing heart? Are you walking in His ways consistently? Do you fear Him with reverent awe? These questions help us respond to His grace with faithful obedience.
