Ephesians 2:10

Listen to this article

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”

Context:Ephesians is one of the letters written by the Apostle Paul to the early Christian church in Ephesus. In this particular passage, Paul is explaining the concept of salvation by grace through faith. He emphasizes that salvation is a gift from God and not based on our own efforts or works.

“For we are his workmanship”:This phrase reminds us that as believers, we are God’s masterpiece or creation. We are not accidents or mere products of chance. God has intentionally created us and has a purpose for our lives.

“Created in Christ Jesus”:Our new identity and purpose are found in Christ Jesus. Through faith in Him, we become new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17). We are spiritually reborn and adopted into God’s family. Our old self, characterized by sin and separation from God, is replaced by a new self in Christ.

“Unto good works”:Although we are not saved by our works, we are saved for good works. God has a plan for our lives, and part of that plan is to walk in righteousness and obedience, demonstrating His love and reflecting His character through our actions. Good works are the evidence and outflow of our faith in Christ.

“Which God hath before ordained”:Before the foundation of the world, God had already prepared good works for us to walk in. This indicates God’s sovereign plan and purpose for each believer. Our lives are not aimless or without meaning; rather, they are part of God’s grand design.

“That we should walk in them”:Walking in good works implies a continual lifestyle of obedience and service to God. Our faith is not merely a one-time event but an ongoing relationship with God that manifests itself through a life marked by love, kindness, justice, and compassion towards others.

Key Takeaways:

  • We are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for a purpose.
  • Salvation is a gift from God, received by faith, and not by our own efforts.
  • Good works are the result of our faith and are a vital part of our Christian walk.
  • God has a specific plan and ordained good works for each believer.
  • Our lives should reflect a consistent pattern of obedience and service to God.

Ephesians 2:10 highlights the transformative power of God’s grace and emphasizes the importance of living out our faith through good works. It reminds us that our salvation is not only about our personal relationship with God but also about the impact we can have on others as we live out God’s purposes.
