Deuteronomy 14:28
At the end of three years thou shalt bring forth all the tithe of thine increase the same year, and shalt lay it up within thy gates:
Deuteronomy 14:28 (KJV)
Context
Deuteronomy records Moses’ final words to Israel before they entered the Promised Land. The book stresses obedience to God’s commandments and faithfulness to Him. Chapter 14 gives laws about tithing, and this verse describes a special tithe collected every third year.
Meaning
The verse instructs the people to bring all the tithe of their increase at the end of three years and store it within their gates. This was not the regular annual tithe but a separate one for the community. The phrase “within thy gates” means the tithe was kept in local towns for distribution to those in need, especially the Levites, strangers, orphans, and widows, as the next verse explains (Deuteronomy 14:29).
Biblical connections
Tithing meant giving a tenth of one’s produce or income to the Lord. It supported the Levites, who had no land inheritance, and provided for the poor and for festivals. The three-year cycle shows a regular, disciplined pattern of giving, not a one-time act. This practice reflects the principle that all increase comes from God, and a portion is returned to Him for the good of others.
Application
This passage teaches faithful stewardship. The Israelites acknowledged that all they had was from God by giving back a tenth. Believers today are also called to honour God with their finances, recognising that resources come from Him. The regularity of the three-year cycle encourages consistency in giving, not just occasional generosity.
The tithe stored within the gates fostered unity and mutual support. It provided for the needy and for those who served the community. As part of the body of Christ, believers are called to care for one another, sharing resources and supporting fellow believers. This structured, community-oriented giving is a foundational example for Christian stewardship.
Reflection
This verse does not directly command a New Testament tithing mandate, but it shows the importance of intentional, systematic giving. It calls believers to trust God’s provision and to prioritise generosity as an act of worship and obedience. Consider how your giving can support spiritual leaders and the needy in your community.
