Deuteronomy 26:16

Listen to this article

“This day the LORD thy God hath commanded thee to do these statutes and judgments: thou shalt therefore keep and do them with all thine heart, and with all thy soul.”

Context: The book of Deuteronomy contains Moses’ farewell speeches to the Israelites, given before they enter the Promised Land. It serves as a reminder of God’s laws, commands, and promises.

Divine Command: The verse begins by emphasizing that the Lord God has commanded the Israelites to follow His statutes and judgments. God’s commands are not suggestions but absolute directives. It highlights the importance of obedience to God’s word.

Obedience from the Heart: The verse instructs the Israelites to keep and do God’s commandments with all their heart and soul. This emphasizes the need for wholehearted devotion to God’s instructions, going beyond mere external compliance. It implies that obedience should flow from a deep love and reverence for God.

Application for Believers: While this verse was originally addressed to the Israelites, it carries a broader message for all believers today. As Christians, we are called to follow God’s commandments and live a life of obedience. Jesus summarized the greatest commandments as loving God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and loving our neighbour as ourselves (Matthew 22:37-39). Our obedience should arise from a genuine love for God and a desire to please Him.

The Role of Grace: It is essential to note that obedience to God’s commandments does not earn salvation or God’s favour. Salvation is a gift of grace through faith in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:8-9). However, as believers, our obedience is a response to God’s grace and love for us. It is an expression of our gratitude and desire to live in a way that honours and glorifies God.

God’s Promises: Throughout the book of Deuteronomy, God promises blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience. By faithfully obeying His commandments, the Israelites would experience the goodness and provision of God. Similarly, as believers, we can trust in God’s promises and experience His blessings when we walk in obedience to His word.
