Deuteronomy 26:17
Thou hast avouched the Lord this day to be thy God, and to walk in his ways, and to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and to hearken unto his voice:
Deuteronomy 26:17 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to Moses’ farewell address to Israel on the plains of Moab, just before they entered the Promised Land. It is part of a covenant renewal ceremony, not a private moment. The people made a solemn, public declaration that the LORD was their God.
Meaning
The word “avouched” means to declare or affirm solemnly. The Israelites were not making a quiet promise; they were publicly confirming their side of the covenant. They pledged to walk in God’s ways, meaning their whole lives would follow His principles. They also committed to keep His statutes, commandments, and judgments, which include the Ten Commandments and the laws given through Moses. Finally, they promised to hearken to His voice, showing an attentive and responsive heart toward God’s guidance. This is a comprehensive, whole-life obedience that flows from a heart relationship, not mere external compliance.
Biblical connections
Deuteronomy 26:16 stresses that these commands are to be kept “with all thy heart, and with all thy soul.” The next verse, Deuteronomy 26:18, shows the mutual nature of the covenant: as Israel avouches the LORD, He avouches them as His treasured people. This echoes the first commandment’s call to exclusive loyalty, declaring that the LORD alone is their God.
Application
Believers today are called to make a similar public declaration. Following Christ means more than private belief; it involves a verbal, ongoing commitment to obey His Word and listen for His voice. This covenant relationship is both a divine gift and a human response. Let your words and actions together affirm that the LORD is your God.
Reflection
Consider your own declaration of allegiance. Does your daily walk match your words? The Israelites’ promise was comprehensive, covering every area of life. Let this verse encourage you to renew your commitment to God with all your heart and soul.
