Deuteronomy 28:13

Posted on 31 August 2024

And the Lord shall make thee the head, and not the taile, and thou shalt be aboue onely, and thou shalt not be beneath: if that thou hearken vnto the Commandements of the Lord thy God, which I command thee this day, to obserue, and to doe them: Deuteronomy 28:13 (KJV)

Deuteronomy, the fifth book of the Old Testament, is traditionally attributed to Moses and contains his final speeches to the Israelites as they prepared to enter the Promised Land. In chapter 28, Moses delivers a detailed account of the blessings that accompany obedience and the curses that follow disobedience.

In verse 13 the Lord promises that the Israelites will be exalted and elevated above all other nations, using the metaphor of being “the head, and not the tail” to signify honour, prominence, and leadership. This language indicates that God’s people will occupy a position of authority and influence rather than a subordinate or inferior one.

The condition for receiving these blessings is obedience to God’s commandments; the verse stresses that the people must not only hear the commandments but also observe and act upon them, highlighting the importance of putting God’s instructions into daily practice.

Faithful Obedience: As Christians, our relationship with God is built on faith and obedience, calling us to listen to His Word, study His commandments, and apply them in our lives. True blessings flow when we wholeheartedly follow God’s instructions.

Spiritual Leadership: Just as the Israelites were promised to be the head and not the tail, believers are called to be leaders and influencers in their spheres of influence. Through a life surrendered to God and obedience to His Word, we can make a positive impact on the world around us.

The Power of God’s Word: This verse underscores that God’s commandments are not mere suggestions but life‑giving instructions that lead to blessings when followed. The Word of God is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path (Psalm 119:105), guiding us in our daily lives.

In summary, Deuteronomy 28:13 teaches that blessings come through obedience to God’s commandments. When we faithfully follow His instructions, God exalts and elevates us, enabling us to lead and influence others. The passage highlights the importance of actively applying God’s Word, trusting in His promises, and living a life of faith and obedience.
