Listen to this article

“He made him ride on the high places of the earth, that he might eat the increase of the fields; and he made him to suck honey out of the rock, and oil out of the flinty rock.”

This verse is part of the Song of Moses found in Deuteronomy 32. It is a poetic song that Moses composed to remind the Israelites of God’s faithfulness, their history, and the consequences of turning away from Him. Let’s explore the key elements and messages conveyed in this verse.

Exalted Position:The verse begins by describing how God made Israel "ride on the high places of the earth." This imagery symbolizes God’s favour and blessings upon the nation. Riding on the high places suggests a position of authority, honour, and prosperity. It signifies the exalted status and privileged position that God granted to Israel among the nations.

Abundance and Provision:The verse continues by stating that God provided for Israel’s physical needs. The phrase "that he might eat the increase of the fields" highlights God’s abundant provision of crops and harvests. It emphasizes the fruitful land that God had promised to bless His people with. This provision demonstrates God’s faithfulness in sustaining His chosen nation.

Unusual Sources of Nourishment:The verse goes on to describe how God provided sustenance in extraordinary ways. It says that God made Israel "to suck honey out of the rock, and oil out of the flinty rock." This imagery portrays the miraculous and unexpected provision of nourishment. In a barren and desolate land, God supplied Israel with honey and oil, which are symbols of sweetness and richness. It shows that God can provide for His people even in seemingly impossible circumstances.

The overall message conveyed in this verse is that God chose Israel, blessed them with an exalted position, and provided for their needs abundantly, even in unconventional ways. It highlights God’s faithfulness, His ability to provide, and His desire to bless His people.

By studying this verse, we can learn important lessons about God’s character and His relationship with His chosen people. It reminds us of God’s faithfulness to fulfil His promises and His willingness to bless and sustain His people in extraordinary ways. It also encourages us to trust in God’s provision and to remain faithful to Him.
