Deuteronomy 32:14
Butter of kine, and milk of sheep, with fat of lambs, and rams of the breed of Bashan, and goats, with the fat of kidneys of wheat; and thou didst drink the pure blood of the grape.
Deuteronomy 32:14 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to the Song of Moses, a poetic and prophetic witness given to Israel just before Moses died. The song reminds the people of God’s faithful care and warns them against turning away from Him. Here Moses describes the rich food and drink God provided in the wilderness and in the Promised Land.
Meaning
The list of foods shows abundance: butter from cows, milk from sheep, fat lambs, strong rams from Bashan, goats, and the finest wheat. Bashan was a fertile region famous for its healthy livestock, so these words picture a land of plenty. The phrase “fat of kidneys of wheat” is a Hebrew way of saying the very best wheat, not a literal body part. The “pure blood of the grape” is poetic language for wine, a symbol of joy and celebration. This imagery of dairy, meat, and fine wheat conveys not just sustenance but prosperity and delight. The richness of the land is a tangible sign of God’s favor.
Biblical connections
This abundance fulfills the promise of a land “flowing with milk and honey” (Exodus 3:8), showing God’s faithfulness to His word. It also contrasts with the later rebellion of Israel, as the song continues to show how the people would forget God’s goodness. The provision points to God as the giver of every good gift.
Application
God’s care is not only enough but generous. He gives what we need and often much more. This should lead us to gratitude and trust, not to pride or forgetfulness. When we enjoy daily blessings, we can remember that they come from His hand. The abundance described here is a tangible sign of His favor, and our response should be obedience and thankfulness.
Reflection
How do we respond to God’s abundant provision? The Israelites received all this and still turned away. We are called to thank God for His gifts and to remain faithful to Him, knowing that His blessings are signs of His covenant love.
