Deuteronomy 33:23

Listen to this article

“And of Naphtali, he said, O Naphtali, satisfied with favor, and full with the blessing of the LORD: possess thou the west and the south.”

Deuteronomy 33:23 is part of Moses’ blessings to the twelve tribes of Israel before his death. This particular verse focuses on the tribe of Naphtali and contains a message of blessing and favour. Let’s explore its significance and some key themes:

Tribes of Naphtali:Naphtali was one of the twelve tribes of Israel, descended from Naphtali, the son of Jacob (Israel). The territory of Naphtali was located in the northern part of the Promised Land, near the Sea of Galilee. This region bordered the west and the south, as mentioned in the verse.

Satisfaction and Favour:The verse begins with the phrase, “O Naphtali, satisfied with favour.” It highlights that the tribe of Naphtali would experience contentment and satisfaction as a result of the favour and blessing of the Lord. This indicates that God would provide for their needs abundantly, ensuring they lacked nothing.

Blessings of the Lord:The verse continues, “full with the blessing of the LORD.” Here, Moses emphasises that the tribe of Naphtali would be richly blessed by God. This suggests that they would receive God’s divine favour, protection, provision, and guidance. The blessings bestowed upon them would be abundant and comprehensive.

Possessing the West and the South:The verse concludes with the instruction, “possess thou the west and the south.” This indicates that God would grant Naphtali the opportunity to possess and inhabit the western and southern regions of their territory. It implies the expansion of their boundaries and the abundance of resources within those areas.

Overall, Deuteronomy 33:23 portrays God’s favour, blessing, and abundance upon the tribe of Naphtali. It assures them that they will experience satisfaction, favour, and divine provision. The reference to possessing the west and the south suggests the extent of their inheritance and the promise of fruitful lands.

It’s important to note that while these blessings were specifically addressed to the tribe of Naphtali, the broader message conveys God’s faithfulness and provision for His people as a whole. It reminds us of God’s desire to bless and provide for His children when they walk in obedience and faith.
