Posted on 7 September 2024
Listen to this article

“And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him: and the children of Israel hearkened unto him, and did as the Lord commanded Moses.”

Context:To understand the significance of Deuteronomy 34:9, it’s essential to grasp the context. The book of Deuteronomy is the last book of the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Bible) and contains Moses’ final words and instructions to the Israelites before they enter the Promised Land. Deuteronomy 34 describes Moses’ death and the transition of leadership to Joshua.

Joshua’s Character:Deuteronomy 34:9 highlights Joshua’s character and the divine commissioning he received from Moses. Joshua was described as being “full of the spirit of wisdom.” This attribute set him apart as a leader who was equipped by God for the task ahead. Joshua’s wisdom was not merely intellectual knowledge but also included discernment, understanding, and practical insight for leading the Israelites.

The Laying on of Hands:The verse mentions that Moses laid his hands upon Joshua. The laying on of hands symbolises the transfer of authority, blessing, or anointing from one person to another. In this case, Moses laid his hands on Joshua, signifying the transfer of leadership and the divine authority Moses had received from God. This act served as a public affirmation of Joshua’s appointment as the new leader of Israel.

The Response of the Children of Israel:Deuteronomy 34:9 further states that the children of Israel hearkened unto Joshua and did as the Lord commanded Moses. This highlights the obedience and trust of the Israelites in accepting Joshua’s leadership. They recognised the divine authority vested in Joshua and willingly followed his guidance, which was aligned with God’s commands.

Lessons for Us:Deuteronomy 34:9 teaches us several lessons. First, leadership transitions are significant, and God prepares and anoints individuals to carry out His purposes. Second, wisdom is an essential quality for leaders, and it comes from God. Third, the laying on of hands signifies the passing of authority and blessing, and it serves as a visible representation of God’s approval. Lastly, the obedience and submission of God’s people are vital for the successful execution of His plans.

In conclusion, Deuteronomy 34:9 highlights Joshua’s appointment as the new leader of Israel and emphasises his wisdom, divine commissioning through the laying on of hands by Moses, and the obedience of the children of Israel. This verse teaches us about the importance of godly leadership, the role of wisdom, and the significance of authority and obedience in fulfilling God’s purposes.
