Joshua 3:10

And Joshua said, Hereby ye shall know that the living God is among you, and that he will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Hivites, and the Perizzites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Jebusites.

Joshua 3:10 (KJV)

The book of Joshua records the Israelites entering the Promised Land after their exodus from Egypt and forty years of wilderness wandering. Joshua, who succeeded Moses as leader, speaks to the people just before they cross the Jordan River. This verse is part of his address, giving them a sign that the living God is among them and will drive out the nations occupying Canaan. The people stand on the brink of a new chapter, and Joshua’s words prepare them for the miracle that will confirm God’s presence.

Joshua begins with “Hereby ye shall know,” pointing to a coming proof. The proof is that the living God is among them. The phrase “living God” contrasts with the lifeless idols of the nations. God has life in Himself and is the source of life. He is not distant or inactive but present and powerful. The list of seven nations—Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites, and Jebusites—represents the inhabitants of the land. Their mention shows the completeness of God’s victory over all opposition. This list is not random; it covers the major peoples who occupied the land, assuring Israel that no enemy is too strong for God.

God’s promise to drive out these nations connects to His covenant with Abraham, as recorded in Genesis 15:18-21. There God promised to give Abraham’s descendants the land from the river of Egypt to the Euphrates, listing the same peoples. Joshua’s words assure the Israelites that God is faithful to fulfill what He promised long ago. The crossing of the Jordan, which follows, will be the mighty act that confirms His presence and guarantees victory. This event also echoes the earlier crossing of the Red Sea, showing that the God who delivered Israel from Egypt continues to act on their behalf.

This verse teaches us to trust in God’s presence and guidance. Just as the Israelites had assurance of God’s nearness, we can find comfort in knowing that God is with us in every step of our journey. We can rely on God’s promises, even when circumstances seem impossible. The presence of the Canaanite nations symbolizes the challenges and obstacles we face. Joshua’s proclamation gives hope that God will enable us to overcome them. We should cultivate awareness of God’s presence through prayer, reading Scripture, and worship. We must hold onto God’s promises by studying and meditating on His Word. We should persevere in faith and obedience, knowing that God is with us and will lead us through difficulties. When we face formidable challenges, we can remember that God’s power is not limited by our circumstances.

Joshua 3:10 reminds us that God is not distant but actively involved in the lives of His people. His presence is known through His mighty acts, and His promises are certain. When we face formidable challenges, we can trust in God’s power and faithfulness. The God who drove out nations before Israel is the same God who walks with us today. He is the living God, and He will not fail us. This truth calls us to respond with confident faith, knowing that the One who promised is able to fulfill every word.
