Joshua 4:12

Listen to this article

“And the children of Reuben, and the children of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh, passed over armed before the children of Israel, as Moses spake unto them: Joshua 4:12 (KJV)”

Context:The book of Joshua recounts the Israelites’ journey into the Promised Land under the leadership of Joshua after Moses’ death. In Joshua 4, the Israelites have crossed the Jordan River miraculously on dry ground, as God commanded Joshua. This verse specifically mentions the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh, who crossed over armed before the rest of the Israelites.

Crossing of the Jordan River:Before entering the Promised Land, the Israelites faced the obstacle of the Jordan River, which was at flood stage. However, just as God parted the Red Sea for the Israelites during the time of Moses, He once again miraculously caused the Jordan River to stop flowing, enabling the people to cross over on dry ground (Joshua 3:14-17). This event demonstrated God’s power and faithfulness to fulfill His promises to the Israelites.

Division of the Land:In Numbers 32, the tribes of Reuben and Gad, along with half the tribe of Manasseh, requested to settle on the eastern side of the Jordan River, where they found fertile land suitable for their livestock (Numbers 32:1-5). Moses granted their request with the condition that they would assist their fellow Israelites in conquering the land of Canaan (Numbers 32:20-32). Thus, in Joshua 4:12, we see these tribes passing over armed before the rest of the Israelites, fulfilling their commitment to help their brethren.

Obedience to God’s Command:Moses had instructed the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh to cross over armed before the rest of Israel, as mentioned in Joshua 4:12. This passage highlights their obedience to Moses’ command. It is crucial to note that their obedience was not merely to Moses but ultimately to God, who had established Moses as the leader of the Israelites. Their obedience demonstrated their faith in God’s appointed leadership and their commitment to follow His instructions.

Application:Joshua 4:12 reminds us of the importance of unity, obedience, and fulfilling our commitments. The tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh exemplified unity by standing with their fellow Israelites in conquering the Promised Land. They were obedient to God’s command through Moses, which ultimately led to the fulfillment of God’s promises. As followers of Christ, we are called to walk in unity with our fellow believers, obey God’s Word, and fulfill our commitments to Him and one another.

In summary:Joshua 4:12 highlights the unity, obedience, and commitment displayed by the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh as they crossed the Jordan River armed before the children of Israel. This passage encourages us to value unity, obey God’s commands, and fulfill our commitments to Him and our fellow believers.
