Listen to this article

About fourty thousand prepared for war, passed ouer before the Lord vnto battell, to the plaines of Iericho. Joshua 4:13 (KJV)

The book of Joshua records the events following Moses’ death and the Israelites’ entry into the Promised Land under Joshua’s leadership. In this chapter the nation crossed the Jordan River on dry ground as the priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant stepped into the riverbed. After the crossing, twelve stones were taken from the Jordan and set up as a memorial to commemorate the miraculous event.

Acknowledging God’s Presence – Joshua 4:13 shows the Israelites passing over before the Lord unto battle, indicating that their victory was attributed to God’s presence and direction. The narrative also records that Joshua called the twelve men to bear the Ark of the Covenant, reminding believers to recognize God’s guiding hand in every undertaking.

Preparedness – The verse notes that about forty thousand warriors were ready for war, emphasizing the importance of being prepared. For the Christian, spiritual battles require preparation through prayer, diligent study of Scripture, and reliance on the Holy Spirit’s power.

Unity – The crossing was a collective act of the whole nation, illustrating the vital role of unity among God’s people. The New Testament describes believers as one body with many members (1 Corinthians 12:12‑27), calling us to work together in harmony, supporting and encouraging one another for the advancement of God’s kingdom.

Obedience – The Israelites obeyed God’s specific instruction to cross the Jordan as the priests carried the Ark. Likewise, obedience to God’s Word is essential for our spiritual journey; trusting His wisdom allows Him to work through us and demonstrate our faith.

Remembering God’s Faithfulness – The twelve stones set up after the crossing serve as a lasting memorial of God’s faithfulness in bringing Israel into the Promised Land. Remembering God’s past provision strengthens our faith and encourages trust in His continued deliverance.

Application – From Joshua 4:13 we learn to acknowledge God’s presence, stay spiritually prepared, foster unity, practice obedience, and remember God’s faithfulness. Applying these principles leads to victory and enables us to witness God’s work in and through our lives.
