Joshua 8:17

Listen to this article

“And there was not a man left in Ai or Bethel that went not out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel.”

This verse is part of the account of the Israelites’ conquest of the city of Ai, as recorded in the book of Joshua in the Old Testament. To understand its significance, let’s provide some context.

In Joshua 8, the Israelites were preparing to attack the city of Ai for the second time. The first attempt had ended in defeat due to the sin of Achan, who had taken forbidden plunder from the city of Jericho (Joshua 7). After dealing with the sin in their camp, the Israelites sought guidance from God on how to proceed.

Joshua 8:1-2, God instructed Joshua to take the entire army and set an ambush behind the city of Ai. He also promised that this time they would be victorious. Joshua followed God’s instructions, positioning the Israelite army strategically.

Verse 17 describes the outcome of the plan. As the Israelites set the ambush and drew the attention of the people of Ai, all the men of Ai and Bethel left their cities to pursue the Israelites. By doing so, they left the city of Ai defenseless and unguarded. The pursuit of the Israelites was a ruse, designed to draw the people of Ai away from their city.

The significance of this verse lies in the fulfillment of God’s promise and the effectiveness of the Israelites’ strategy. By luring the people of Ai away from their city, the Israelites were able to take advantage of the moment and swiftly conquer Ai without resistance. The account continues in the subsequent verses, describing how the Israelites burned the city of Ai and took possession of it.

From a broader perspective, this verse demonstrates the importance of obedience to God’s instructions and the faithfulness of God in fulfilling His promises. Joshua and the Israelites sought God’s guidance, followed His instructions, and experienced victory as a result.

In summary, Joshua 8:17 records the successful execution of the Israelites’ strategy in conquering the city of Ai. It highlights the faithfulness of God in fulfilling His promises and the importance of obedience to His guidance.
