Joshua 8:17
And there was not a man left in Ai or Beth–el, that went not out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel.
Joshua 8:17 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to the account of Israel’s second attack on Ai. The first attempt failed because Achan took forbidden plunder from Jericho (Joshua 7). After the people dealt with that sin, God told Joshua to set an ambush behind Ai and promised victory (Joshua 8:1-2). Joshua obeyed the plan exactly.
Meaning
The verse reports that every fighting man in Ai and Bethel left their cities to chase Israel. The phrase “there was not a man left” stresses that no defender remained. The cities stood open and helpless. This was not an accident; it was the intended result of the ambush. The enemy’s own pursuit made them vulnerable.
The mention of Bethel is important. Bethel’s soldiers joined Ai’s forces, making the pursuit larger. Yet this also meant both cities were exposed. The combined strength of the enemy became the cause of their downfall. The verse shows the complete evacuation, leaving both cities undefended, which was necessary for the ambush to succeed.
Biblical connections
God’s instruction in Joshua 8:1-2 included the command to set the ambush and to draw the men out. This verse shows that instruction being fulfilled. The victory did not come from Israel’s military power but from following God’s direction. The enemy’s action, though deliberate, served God’s purpose. God can use the enemy’s own choices to bring about their defeat.
Application
Obedience to God’s guidance often requires patience and trust. Joshua did not rush ahead; he waited for the Lord’s plan and carried it out precisely. When we follow God’s instructions, even when they seem unusual, we can trust Him to bring about the result He promised.
The verse also warns against overconfidence. The men of Ai and Bethel thought they were chasing a fleeing army. In reality, they were walking into a trap. Human plans, when set against God’s purposes, cannot succeed. Their strength became their weakness.
Reflection
God can use the actions of His enemies to accomplish His will. The very pursuit that seemed to threaten Israel became the means of Ai’s destruction. This reminds us that God is sovereign over every situation, even those that appear dangerous. His faithfulness to His covenant people stands firm, and His promises do not fail. We can rest in His control, knowing that He works all things for His purpose.
