Joshua 9:2
That they gathered themselves together, to fight with Joshua and with Israel, with one accord.
Joshua 9:2 (KJV)
Context
The book of Joshua tells what happened after Moses died and Israel entered the Promised Land. The people had crossed the Jordan and taken Jericho and Ai. The surrounding kings heard of these victories and became afraid. Joshua 9:2 records their response: they gathered together to fight against Joshua and Israel with one accord.
This alliance included the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. These were separate peoples with their own rulers, yet they joined as one to oppose God’s people. Their unity came from fear and a shared desire to stop Israel’s advance. This sets the stage for the next event, where the Gibeonites chose a different path. Instead of joining the alliance, they used deception to make a peace treaty with Israel (Joshua 9:3-15).
Meaning
The phrase “with one accord” shows how determined the enemy was. They were not divided or hesitant; they were united in opposition. This unity among Israel’s enemies contrasts with the unity God’s people need. The Canaanite kings saw Israel’s victories and understood that God was with them, but they still chose to resist. Their gathering was not only political; it was spiritual opposition to God’s promise to give Israel the land.
This verse reminds us that opposition to God’s work is real. When God’s people move forward in faith, they can expect resistance. Yet human plans against God’s will do not succeed. Later, in Joshua 10:42, we read that Joshua captured all these kings at one time because the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel. The enemy’s unity could not stand against God’s power.
Biblical connections
The unity of the Canaanite kings warns us about the danger of being united for the wrong purpose. In the New Testament, believers are called to unity in Christ, but that unity must be built on truth and obedience. The Gibeonites’ deception and Israel’s failure to ask the Lord (Joshua 9:14) show that even God’s people can make serious mistakes when they rely on their own understanding. This passage encourages us to seek God’s guidance before making decisions, especially under pressure.
Application
For believers today, Joshua 9:2 teaches us to trust in God’s promises even when we face united opposition. The Canaanite kings gathered with one accord, but their plans failed because God was on Israel’s side. We can face our own battles with confidence, knowing that God is sovereign over all nations and their plans. We are also called to be united with other believers, supporting one another in spiritual battles. The enemy may be organized, but God’s people have a stronger bond through Christ.
Reflection
This verse invites us to examine our own unity. Are we as determined to follow God as the Canaanites were to oppose Him? Do we gather with other believers with one accord to serve God’s purposes? The enemy’s unity was temporary and doomed, but the unity of God’s people is built on an eternal promise. Let us stand firm, trust in God’s strength, and remain faithful, knowing that He who promised is faithful.
