Joshua 9:1

And it came to pass, when all the kings which were on this side Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea over against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof;

Joshua 9:1 (KJV)

This verse appears in the book of Joshua, which tells how the Israelites entered the Promised Land under Joshua after Moses died. By this time, Joshua had led the people across the Jordan River and had won great victories over Jericho and Ai. The report of these triumphs had spread through the whole region.

The kings mentioned here ruled the land west of the Jordan. The verse names their territories: the hills, the valleys, and the coast of the Great Sea, which is the Mediterranean, toward Lebanon. It also lists six nations: the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. These were the peoples who lived in Canaan before Israel arrived.

The opening phrase, “heard thereof,” is the key action. Every king in the western part of the land learned what God had done for Israel. The list of nations and places shows that the news reached the entire region, not just one small area. This was not a private matter; the fame of Israel’s God and His power had become widely known.

The verse also shows the response of these rulers. They did not simply hear and ignore the news. Their fear and concern led them to act, as the following chapters reveal. The verse is a turning point, moving the story from Israel’s victories to the reaction of the surrounding nations.

This verse prepares the reader for the events in Joshua 9:3-27, where the Gibeonites deceive Israel into making a treaty. It also sets the stage for the coalition of kings who later attack Gibeon because of that treaty. The reaction of these nations shows that God’s power, displayed through Israel, affected the whole land.

This verse reminds us that our actions and faithfulness can have a wide impact. The Israelites did not set out to frighten every king in Canaan, but their obedience to God became known everywhere. In the same way, our lives can speak about God to people we have never met. When we follow Him faithfully, others may see His work and respond, whether in fear, curiosity, or faith.

Consider what others hear about your life. Does your conduct make God’s power and goodness known? The kings heard and were moved to act. May our lives also carry a clear report of God’s faithfulness, so that those around us are drawn to consider Him.
