Joshua 9:20

Posted on 1 October 2024
Listen to this article

“This we will do to them; we will even let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we sware unto them”

Context: Joshua 9 tells the story of the deception of the Gibeonites. The Gibeonites, a neighboring Canaanite city, heard about the victories of the Israelites and feared for their lives. Instead of fighting against Israel, they devised a plan to deceive Joshua and the Israelite leaders by pretending to be from a distant land. They presented themselves before Joshua and requested a treaty, claiming they had come from a distant country to make peace. Without seeking the Lord’s counsel, Joshua and the leaders of Israel made a covenant with them, not realizing they were deceived.

The Importance of Seeking God’s Counsel: One of the key lessons from this passage is the importance of seeking God’s guidance in decision‑making. Joshua and the Israelite leaders made a crucial error by relying on their own judgment and not seeking the Lord’s counsel. As believers, we are called to seek God’s wisdom and guidance in all aspects of our lives. Proverbs 3:5‑6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” It serves as a reminder for us to consult God in our decision‑making process and to trust in His leading.

The Consequences of Making Hasty Decisions: The Israelites made a hasty decision without investigating the truth. They failed to discern the Gibeonites’ deception and entered into a covenant with them. As a result, they had to face the consequences of their actions. When we rush into decisions without seeking God’s guidance or examining the situation thoroughly, we can find ourselves entangled in unfavorable circumstances. It is crucial to exercise caution, wisdom, and discernment when making decisions.

The Importance of Honoring Commitments: Despite being deceived, Joshua and the Israelites honored the covenant they made with the Gibeonites. They recognized the significance of keeping their word and fulfilling their commitments. In our lives, we should strive to uphold our promises and commitments, even when it may be challenging or inconvenient. As followers of Christ, we are called to be people of integrity who honor our commitments and demonstrate faithfulness.

God’s Grace in Our Mistakes: Although the Israelites made a mistake, God’s grace was evident in this situation. In the subsequent chapters, the Gibeonites became servants for the Israelites, and God protected them from harm. Despite their failure to seek God’s guidance initially, God used this situation to demonstrate His faithfulness and mercy. This serves as a reminder that even when we make mistakes, God can still work in and through them for His purposes.

Overall, Joshua 9:20 reminds us of the importance of seeking God’s guidance, exercising caution in decision‑making, honoring commitments, and trusting in God’s grace even in the midst of our mistakes.
