Joshua 9:22
And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us?
Joshua 9:22 (KJV)
Context
Joshua 9:22 records Joshua’s confrontation with the Gibeonites after their deception was discovered. The Gibeonites lived nearby in Canaan, but they feared Israel because of God’s mighty acts. So they disguised themselves as travelers from a distant land, wearing worn clothes and carrying dry provisions, and asked Joshua for a peace treaty. They claimed, “We are very far from you,” yet they actually dwelt among Israel. Joshua and the leaders made a covenant with them without asking the Lord. When the truth came out, Joshua called the Gibeonites and confronted them with their lie.
Meaning
Joshua’s question, “Wherefore have ye beguiled us?” exposes the seriousness of their deceit. The word “beguiled” means to deceive or trick. The Gibeonites misrepresented their proximity, not just their identity. They said they were far away, but they lived in the midst of Israel. This lie led Israel into a covenant they were forbidden to make. The verse shows that deception has real consequences, even when it seems clever or necessary. The Gibeonites acted out of fear, as they later admitted, because they knew God had commanded Israel to destroy the inhabitants of the land.
Biblical connections
Israel’s failure to seek God’s guidance is a key lesson. Earlier, in Joshua 9:14, the men took of their provisions but asked not counsel at the mouth of the Lord. This directly connects to Deuteronomy 7:2, where God commanded Israel not to make treaties with the inhabitants of Canaan. By relying on their own judgment, Israel fell into deception. This reminds us that human wisdom is limited, and we need God’s direction in important decisions.
Application
We can learn to seek God before making commitments. When we face choices, we should pray and consult Scripture, not just trust appearances. The Gibeonites looked harmless, but they were not what they seemed. We also learn to be honest in our words. Deception damages trust and leads to complications. Even when we are deceived, we should act with integrity. Israel honored the covenant they made, even though it was based on a lie. This shows the importance of keeping our word, even when it is costly.
Reflection
God’s purposes are not defeated by human deceit. Despite Israel’s mistake, God continued to lead them. This verse encourages us to trust God’s sovereignty, even when we make errors. We can confess our failures and seek His mercy. The Gibeonites’ fear led them to a clever lie, but God used even that to protect them. This reminds us that God can work through flawed situations. We should be people of truth, but also people of grace, extending forgiveness to those who have wronged us.
