Joshua 10:13

Posted on 2 October 2024
Listen to this article

And the Sunne stood still, and the Moone stayed, vntill the people had auenged themselues vpō their enemies. Is not this written in the booke of Iasher? So the Sunne stood still in the midst of heauen, and hasted not to goe downe, about a whole day. Joshua 10:13 (KJV)

Context and Background:

Joshua 10 recounts the battle of the Israelites against the Amorite kings. Joshua and the Israelite army were engaged in a fierce battle, and Joshua called upon the Lord for assistance. In response to Joshua’s prayer, God performed a miraculous act by causing the sun and the moon to stand still. This extraordinary event gave the Israelites more daylight to secure their victory over their enemies.

Significance of the Sun and Moon Standing Still:

The stopping of the sun and moon in their courses was an exceptional demonstration of God’s power and intervention on behalf of His people. It allowed the Israelites to gain a significant advantage in battle. The fact that this event is recorded in the Bible shows God’s sovereignty over nature and His ability to suspend natural laws to accomplish His purposes.

Reference to the Book of Jasher:

In Joshua 10:13 the account of the sun and moon standing still is said to be written in the “Book of Jasher.” The Book of Jasher is not part of the canonical Scriptures, but it is mentioned twice in the Old Testament (Joshua 10:13 and 2 Samuel 1:18). It is an ancient Hebrew text that is not included in the Bible, and its contents are not available to us today. While a text named “Sefer HaYashar” exists today, its authenticity relative to the biblical reference is debated. Joshua’s statement reflects an existing historical record or chronicle that provided additional details about this remarkable event.

Lessons and Applications:

God’s Power and Sovereignty – The sun and moon standing still demonstrate God’s authority over creation. It reminds us that nothing is impossible for God, and He can intervene in extraordinary ways to fulfill His purposes.

God’s Faithfulness – The miracle showed God’s faithfulness to His promises and to His people. Joshua trusted God’s ability to help them, and God honored that faith by granting a supernatural intervention.

Prayer and Dependence on God – Joshua’s prayer in the midst of battle highlights the importance of seeking God’s guidance and relying on His wisdom, strength, and power rather than on our own abilities.

Historical Records and Faith – The reference to the Book of Jasher underscores that additional historical accounts may complement the biblical narrative. Though the Book of Jasher is not part of the canon, its mention reminds us that historical records can provide further insight into biblical events and affirm the reliability of Scripture.

Overall, Joshua 10:13 showcases God’s supernatural intervention on behalf of His people and reinforces the importance of trust and dependence on God in the face of overwhelming challenges.
