Joshua 11:10

Posted on 3 October 2024
Listen to this article

“And Joshua at that time turned back, and took Hazor, and smote the king thereof with the sword: for Hazor beforetime was the head of all those kingdoms.”

This verse is part of the account of Joshua’s conquest of the Promised Land:Let’s delve deeper into its context and significance.

In Joshua 11, we find that Joshua, the successor of Moses, led the Israelites in a military campaign against various Canaanite kings and their cities. In verse 1, it states that Jabin, the king of Hazor, heard about the Israelites’ victories over other kings and mustered a coalition of kings to fight against Joshua and the Israelites.

In verse 6, the Lord reassures Joshua not to fear because He will deliver the enemies into Joshua’s hands. As Joshua and the Israelite army advanced, they engaged in battle against the confederate armies. In verse 8, the Lord encourages Joshua to hamstring the horses and burn the chariots, as the Lord had commanded them in previous battles.

Verse 10, the focus of our study, highlights Joshua’s conquest of Hazor. Joshua and his forces “turned back” to attack Hazor. They captured the city, and Joshua personally struck down Jabin, the king of Hazor, with a sword. This victory was significant because Hazor was a prominent city and considered the head or leader among the kingdoms in that region.

Hazor held strategic importance:due to its location, military strength, and influence over the surrounding cities. By defeating the king and capturing Hazor, Joshua dealt a severe blow to the Canaanite forces, establishing the Israelites’ dominance in the region and solidifying their conquest of the Promised Land.

This verse demonstrates the fulfillment of God’s promise:to Joshua that He would grant him victory over the Canaanites and deliver the land into the hands of the Israelites. It highlights Joshua’s faithfulness and obedience in carrying out God’s commands, leading to the successful conquest of Hazor.

From a spiritual perspective:Joshua’s conquest of the Promised Land serves as a reminder of the importance of trusting in God’s promises, following His guidance, and relying on His strength. Joshua’s leadership and obedience to God’s commands set an example for believers today, encouraging us to be faithful, courageous, and reliant on God in the face of challenges and opposition.

Overall, Joshua 11:10 showcases an important moment in the Israelites’ conquest of the Promised Land, emphasizing Joshua’s faithful execution of God’s plan and the fulfillment of God’s promises.
