Joshua 11:10

And Joshua at that time turned back, and took Hazor, and smote the king thereof with the sword: for Hazor beforetime was the head of all those kingdoms.

Joshua 11:10 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the account of Joshua’s conquest of Canaan. In Joshua 11, Jabin, king of Hazor, gathered a coalition of northern kings to oppose Israel. After the Lord gave Joshua victory at the waters of Merom, Joshua “turned back” to Hazor. The phrase shows that he returned to the leading city of the alliance, whose capture was both strategic and symbolic. Hazor’s king had organized the coalition, so striking him was a direct blow to the enemy’s leadership.

Joshua took Hazor and struck down its king with the sword. The verse explains that Hazor “beforetime was the head of all those kingdoms.” This means the city held the highest rank and influence among the surrounding nations. Its fall broke the power of the confederacy and secured Israel’s control in the north. The historical detail about Hazor’s former prominence magnifies the significance of its defeat.

The defeat of Hazor fulfilled God’s promise to deliver the land into Israel’s hands. Joshua’s obedience in destroying the enemy leadership followed the Lord’s command. This victory shows that no human power, however great, can stand against God’s purposes. God is faithful to deliver His people and to bring down those who oppose His will.

For believers, this verse teaches the importance of decisive obedience to God, even when facing formidable opposition. Joshua did not stop after the initial battle; he completed the task by dealing with the chief enemy. Trusting God’s promises gives courage to face challenges and to follow His guidance fully. When God gives a command, He also gives the strength to carry it out.

Hazor’s former greatness magnifies the greatness of Israel’s victory and God’s power. No matter how strong an opponent appears, God’s purposes will prevail. Believers can rely on His faithfulness, knowing that He will bring down every force that opposes His will.
