Joshua 11:15
As the Lord commanded Moses his servant, so did Moses command Joshua, and so did Joshua; he left nothing undone of all that the Lord commanded Moses.
Joshua 11:15 (KJV)
Context
Joshua 11 records Israel’s defeat of a coalition of northern Canaanite kings. This verse closes that account by showing how Joshua carried out the Lord’s command completely. The chain of command is clear: the Lord gave instructions to Moses, Moses passed them to Joshua, and Joshua obeyed without leaving anything undone. This was not a small task. The northern coalition was powerful, yet Joshua did not shrink back. His obedience was complete, even when the odds seemed overwhelming.
Meaning
The phrase “he left nothing undone” is strong. It means Joshua did not pick and choose which commands to follow. He obeyed fully, even when the task was difficult. This completeness shows that true obedience is not partial but wholehearted. Joshua trusted that God’s commands were good, and he acted on that trust. His example teaches us that obedience is not about convenience or comfort. It is about faithful action, regardless of the cost. Joshua’s diligence stands as a lasting testimony to his faithfulness.
Biblical connections
The commands Joshua followed included the destruction of the Canaanite peoples and their religious objects, as God had instructed through Moses in Deuteronomy 7:1-6 and 20:16-18. These instructions were clear and specific. Joshua did not alter them or add his own ideas. He simply did what God had commanded. His obedience fulfilled what God had promised to give the land to Israel. His faithfulness also continued the work Moses began, showing that God’s plan moves forward through faithful servants in every generation. The unbroken transmission of God’s will from Moses to Joshua highlights the continuity of God’s purposes.
Application
Joshua’s example challenges us to examine our own obedience. Do we follow God’s Word completely, or do we leave parts undone? Obedience is not merely knowing what God says; it is doing it. We can ask ourselves:
Do I seek to obey God in every area of my life, not just the easy parts?
Am I passing down God’s commands and wisdom to the next generation, as Moses did to Joshua?
Do I trust that God’s ways are right, even when obedience is costly?
When we obey fully, we show that we trust God’s character and His promises. Joshua did not rely on his own strength; he relied on the God who had commanded him. We can do the same, knowing that God gives grace to those who follow Him. Obedience is vital to our relationship with God, and it opens the way for His promises to be fulfilled in our lives.
Reflection
Consider one command from Scripture that you have been avoiding or only partly following. What would it look like to obey it completely, trusting God with the outcome? Joshua’s example reminds us that complete obedience brings blessing and fulfills God’s purposes. Let us follow his faith, leaving nothing undone of all that the Lord has commanded.
