Joshua 12:4

And the coast of Og king of Bashan, which was of the remnant of the giants, that dwelt at Ashtaroth and at Edrei,

Joshua 12:4 (KJV)

Joshua 12 lists the kings defeated by Israel under Moses and Joshua. Verse 4 names Og, king of Bashan, and his cities Ashtaroth and Edrei. This summary shows the completeness of Israel’s victory under God’s direction. It also records how God faithfully gave His people the land He had promised.

Og is described as being “of the remnant of the giants.” The Hebrew word behind “giants” is Rephaim, a people known for great size and strength. Og was one of the last of these mighty warriors. He ruled over Bashan, a fertile and strategic region east of the Jordan. Ashtaroth and Edrei were his royal cities, likely serving as centers of power and defense. Kings often moved between such residences. Og was a king of the Amorites, and his defeat by Israel in the time of Moses is a significant historical event. The mention of these places confirms the reality of his kingdom and the scale of the conquest.

Og’s defeat is also recorded in Deuteronomy 1:4 and Joshua 13:12, which give further details about his territory. The conquest of Bashan fulfilled God’s promise to Abraham that his descendants would inherit this land (Genesis 15:18-21). The defeat of a giant like Og showed that no enemy, however fearsome, could stand against God’s purposes. This victory was not achieved by Israel’s own strength but by God’s power, just as He had promised. The inclusion of this verse in the list of defeated kings underscores the completeness of Israel’s victory under God’s leadership.

This verse encourages believers to trust in God’s faithfulness. Just as God gave Israel victory over Og, He remains faithful to His promises today. The “giants” we face may be difficult circumstances, fears, or obstacles that seem too large to overcome. Yet God is able to give us victory over them. Ashtaroth and Edrei were strongholds that had to be conquered for Israel to possess the land fully. In our lives, we may face personal strongholds such as addiction, unforgiveness, or doubt. Through God’s power, we can overcome these and experience true freedom. The extraordinary nature of this victory reminds us that no enemy, however mighty, can stand against God’s purposes.

God’s victory over Og reminds us that no opposition is too great for Him. The same God who defeated the giants of Bashan is at work in our lives today. We can face our challenges with confidence, knowing that He is with us and empowers us to overcome. This verse calls us to remember God’s mighty acts and to trust that He will fulfill every promise He has made. For the Christian reader, it points to the assurance that God is able to overcome any obstacle or opposition.
