Joshua 13:7

Posted on 8 October 2024
Listen to this article

“Now therefore divide this land for an inheritance unto the nine tribes, and the half tribe of Manasseh,”

Context:The book of Joshua records the events following the death of Moses as the Israelites prepared to enter and conquer the Promised Land. After crossing the Jordan River, the land was divided among the tribes of Israel as an inheritance. Joshua 13:7 takes place after the major battles and conquests of the Promised Land, and it focuses on the division of the remaining land.

Inheritance:The concept of inheritance is important throughout the Bible. In this verse, God commands Joshua to divide the land as an inheritance among the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh. The land was seen as a gift from God, a tangible manifestation of His promise to the Israelites. It symbolised their possession, prosperity, and establishment in the land God had promised them.

Completing the division:By this point, much of the land had already been conquered and allocated to the tribes. However, there was still work to be done in fully dividing the remaining portions. Joshua was responsible for overseeing this process, ensuring that each tribe received its rightful inheritance. This division was not based on personal preferences but on God’s instructions and plans for the Israelites.

Unity and diversity:The division of the land reveals a balance between unity and diversity. While each tribe had its unique inheritance, they were all part of the larger community of Israel. The land distribution demonstrated that God valued diversity among His people but also desired their unity. Each tribe had a role to play in the collective purpose of fulfilling God’s plan.

Stewardship:The division of the land reminds us of the principle of stewardship. The Israelites were given the land as an inheritance, but they were also responsible for its care and management. This teaches us the importance of being good stewards of the resources and blessings God has entrusted to us, using them wisely and for His glory.

Spiritual application:While the physical division of the land is specific to the Israelites, we can draw spiritual lessons from this verse. As believers, we have received a spiritual inheritance through Jesus Christ. Ephesians 1:11 (KJV) says, “In whom also we have obtained an inheritance.” This inheritance includes salvation, eternal life, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, and the promises of God. Just as the land was divided among the tribes, our spiritual inheritance is distributed to each believer according to God’s purposes and plans.

In conclusion, Joshua 13:7 highlights the process of dividing the land of Canaan among the tribes of Israel as their inheritance. This verse teaches us about the concepts of inheritance, unity, diversity, stewardship, and spiritual application. It reminds us of God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises and the importance of being good stewards of the blessings we receive.
