Joshua 13:7

Now therefore divide this land for an inheritance unto the nine tribes, and the half tribe of Manasseh,

Joshua 13:7 (KJV)

The book of Joshua records events after Moses’ death, as Israel entered and conquered the Promised Land. Joshua 13:7 comes after the major battles, when God commands Joshua to divide the remaining land among the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh. This command was not optional; Joshua had the authority and responsibility to act immediately and diligently.

The word “inheritance” is central. The land was a gift from God, a tangible fulfillment of His promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It symbolized possession, prosperity, and establishment in the place God had prepared. The nine tribes were Judah, Simeon, Benjamin, Dan, Ephraim, Zebulun, Issachar, Asher, and Naphtali. The half-tribe of Manasseh refers to the western half of Joseph’s descendants, who received land west of the Jordan, while the other half had already settled east of the river with Reuben and Gad.

This division was not based on personal preference but on God’s instructions. Each tribe received its portion according to God’s plan, showing that the inheritance was given by grace, not earned. The distribution was an organized process, overseen by Joshua and the leaders, ensuring that every tribe received its rightful share.

The division reveals a balance between unity and diversity. Each tribe had a unique inheritance, yet all were part of the larger community of Israel. God valued diversity among His people but also desired their unity, with each tribe playing a role in fulfilling His plan. This mirrors the New Testament teaching that believers have different gifts but form one body in Christ.

As believers, we have received a spiritual inheritance through Jesus Christ. Ephesians 1:11 connects directly to this theme, for it speaks of our inheritance in Him, which includes salvation, eternal life, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, and the promises of God. Just as the land was divided among the tribes, our spiritual inheritance is distributed to each believer according to God’s purposes.

The division of the land teaches stewardship. The Israelites were given the land as an inheritance, but they were responsible for its care and management. We are called to be good stewards of the resources and blessings God entrusts to us, using them wisely and for His glory. This includes our time, talents, and material possessions.

God’s command to divide the land also demonstrates His covenant faithfulness. He keeps His promises and provides for His people. When we face uncertainty, we can trust that God will fulfill His word and give us what we need for the journey ahead.

Joshua 13:7 reminds us that God is faithful to complete what He has begun. The land was a gift, but it required action and obedience to receive it. In the same way, our spiritual inheritance is secure in Christ, yet we are called to walk in obedience and faith. Consider how you are stewarding the inheritance God has given you, and whether you are trusting Him to provide for every need.
