Joshua 14:8

Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt: but I wholly followed the Lord my God.

Caleb speaks these words to Joshua at Gilgal, as the Israelites prepare to enter the Promised Land. Now eighty-five years old, Caleb recalls events from forty-five years earlier when Moses sent twelve spies, one from each tribe, to scout Canaan. The majority gave a negative report, focusing on the strength of the inhabitants, and their words caused the hearts of the Israelites to melt with fear. In contrast, Caleb and Joshua urged the people to trust God’s promise.

Meaning

The phrase “made the heart of the people melt” means to discourage, fill with fear, and cause loss of courage, so that the people became weak and hopeless. Caleb’s statement “I wholly followed the Lord my God” indicates complete loyalty, wholehearted trust, and unwavering obedience to God’s command, despite the majority opinion. He did not allow the fear of others to weaken his own resolve.

In Joshua 14:9, Moses swore to Caleb that the land his feet had walked on would be his inheritance because he followed the Lord wholeheartedly.
