Joshua 15:56
Ind Iezreel, and Iokdeam, and Zanoah, Joshua 15:56 (KJV)
Context: The book of Joshua records the division of the Promised Land among the tribes of Israel after their conquest under Joshua’s leadership. Joshua 15 describes the inheritance of the tribe of Judah. Verse 56 lists three cities that were allotted to the tribe of Judah.
Jezreel is listed among the towns allotted to the tribe of Judah, though its precise location is uncertain and the better‑known city of Jezreel lies in the northern part of Israel. Its name means “God sows” or “God will sow.” The city appears elsewhere in Scripture, especially in narratives concerning the Northern Kingdom, the house of Ahab, and Jezebel. The better‑known Jezreel is the setting for the dramatic events involving King Ahab, Queen Jezebel, and the prophet Elijah.
Jokdeam was another city allotted to the tribe of Judah. Not much is known about this place, as it is not mentioned in other biblical passages. Its exact location remains uncertain, but it was likely situated within the boundaries of Judah’s territory.
Zanoah was a town in the territory of Judah. Its name is understood to convey ideas of “abundance” or “protection.” Zanoah is referenced in Nehemiah 3:13 and Nehemiah 11:30, and during the post‑exilic period its inhabitants took an active part in rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem. The participation of Zanoah’s residents in the wall‑building effort reflects the broader communal commitment to re‑establish Jerusalem after the exile.
These brief entries remind the reader that many of the towns listed in Joshua’s allotment remain obscure, yet each contributed in its own way to the history and restoration of Israel.
