Joshua 15:56

And Jezreel, and Jokdeam, and Zanoah,

Joshua 15:56 (KJV)

The book of Joshua records the division of the Promised Land among the tribes of Israel after their conquest under Joshua’s leadership. Joshua 15 describes the inheritance of the tribe of Judah. Verse 56 lists three cities allotted to Judah: Jezreel, Jokdeam, and Zanoah.

Jezreel here is not the famous northern city of the same name. This Jezreel lies in Judah’s hill country, and its name means “God sows” or “God will sow.” The better-known Jezreel appears in stories about King Ahab, Queen Jezebel, and the prophet Elijah.

Jokdeam is mentioned only here in Scripture. Its exact location is unknown, but it was likely within Judah’s territory. Zanoah’s name suggests “abundance” or “protection.” Its residents later helped rebuild Jerusalem’s walls after the exile, as recorded in Nehemiah 3:13 and Nehemiah 11:30.

These brief entries remind readers that many towns in Joshua’s allotment remain obscure, yet each contributed to Israel’s history and restoration. The list shows God’s faithfulness in giving the land He promised to Abraham. It also demonstrates that God cares about details—specific places, families, and inheritances.

Judah’s territory held special significance because the Messiah would come from this tribe. The precise recording of these towns points to the accuracy of God’s plan and His sovereign ordering of history. Even the smallest names are part of the larger story of redemption.

God’s attention to these small, unknown places encourages believers to see His hand in ordinary and specific aspects of life. Every person and place has a role in redemptive history. This passage invites readers to trust God’s faithfulness across generations and to value their own heritage of faith, passing it on to future generations.
