Joshua 15:54

And Humtah, and Kirjath–arba, which is Hebron, and Zior; nine cities with their villages:

Joshua 15:54 (KJV)

Joshua 15 records the division of the land of Canaan among the tribes of Israel. This verse is part of the description of the inheritance of the tribe of Judah, listing cities within their allotted territory. The verse names three cities—Humtah, Kirjath-arba (which is Hebron), and Zior—and states that these are nine cities with their villages, concluding the second division of Judah’s allotment.

Humtah was one of the nine cities given to the tribe of Judah. There is limited information available about this specific city; it is mentioned only here in the Bible.

Kirjath-arba (Hebron) is a well-known city mentioned in various parts of the Bible. In ancient times, it was called Kirjath-arba, meaning “City of Arba.” The identification of Kirjath-arba with Hebron is a clear historical and geographical note. Hebron is most notable as the place where Abraham dwelled and where he purchased a burial site for his wife Sarah (Genesis 23). Additionally, Hebron holds significance as the place where David was anointed as king over Judah before ruling over all Israel (2 Samuel 2:1-4). Furthermore, Hebron was one of the cities of refuge designated for those who unintentionally caused someone’s death (Joshua 20:7).

Zior is another city listed as part of the inheritance of Judah. Like Humtah, there is limited information available regarding this city; it is mentioned only here in the Bible. Jerome reported a village called Sihor in his time between Jerusalem and Eleutheropolis, possibly preserving the ancient name.

The verse’s emphasis on the precise number of cities and their villages reflects the orderly recording of the inheritance. This detailed listing, including the notable Hebron, underscores the concrete, historical nature of God’s promises to His people.

While the specific details of these cities may not hold much significance for readers today, this verse highlights the fulfilment of God’s promise to divide the land among the tribes of Israel. Throughout the book of Joshua, we see the Israelites possessing the Promised Land as God had commanded them. It serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness in keeping His promises to His people.

Although this verse may not directly offer spiritual lessons, it reminds us of the importance of obedience to God’s commands. The tribes of Israel were to take possession of the land and settle in their allotted territories, trusting God’s guidance and provision. Similarly, as believers today, we are called to trust in God’s promises, follow His Word, and walk in obedience to Him.

Joshua 15:54 provides a glimpse into the distribution of the land among the tribes of Israel, emphasising God’s faithfulness and the importance of obedience to His commands. While some cities mentioned in this verse may have limited historical significance, they serve as reminders of God’s promises and the fulfilment of His plans for His people.
