Joshua 18:2

Posted on 18 October 2024
Listen to this article

“And there remained among the children of Israel seven tribes, which had not yet received their inheritance.”

Historical Context:Joshua 18:2 is set in the period after the conquest of Jericho and Ai, when the land of Canaan was being divided among the twelve tribes of Israel. At this point, the tribes of Judah, Joseph (Ephraim and Manasseh), and Benjamin had received their allotted portions, but seven tribes had not yet received their inheritance. The Israelites were in Gilgal, and it was time to distribute the remaining land.

The Promised Land:God had promised the land of Canaan to the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The process of possessing the land involved the conquest of various nations inhabiting the region. After the initial victories, the Israelites were instructed to divide the land among the tribes as their inheritance. The land distribution was crucial for fulfilling God’s promise and establishing the Israelites in their new homeland.

Significance of Inheritance:In the Old Testament, inheritance was a vital concept that represented God’s provision and faithfulness to His people. Each tribe received its portion of the land as an inheritance from God. The land provided sustenance, security, and a place for the tribes to settle and flourish. The distribution of land was not merely a geographical division but also a reflection of God’s covenant promises to the Israelites.

Delayed Inheritance:The fact that seven tribes had not yet received their inheritance in Joshua 18:2 suggests a delay or hesitation on their part. It is possible that they were slow in carrying out their responsibilities or had not fully committed to claiming their allotted portions. This delay prompted Joshua to inquire and encourage them to possess their inheritances fully.

Lessons for Believers:

  • Completing the Promises of God:The delay in possessing their inheritance reminds us that we should not be passive in claiming the promises God has given us. As believers, we are heirs of God’s promises (Romans 8:17) and should actively pursue His purposes and blessings in our lives.
  • Taking Initiative:Joshua’s words to the seven tribes reflect the importance of taking initiative and being diligent in fulfilling our responsibilities. We should not be complacent but rather actively seek God’s guidance and act upon it.
  • Trusting God’s Provision:The distribution of the land reminds us of God’s faithfulness to provide for His people. We can trust that God will fulfill His promises in His perfect timing. Just as the Israelites received their inheritance, we can rely on God’s provision and guidance in our lives.
  • Completing the Journey:The Israelites’ conquest of the Promised Land and the distribution of the land marked the completion of their journey from slavery in Egypt to a settled nation. Similarly, as believers, we are on a journey of faith, and it is essential to remain committed and complete the tasks God has entrusted to us.

In conclusion, Joshua 18:2 highlights the delay in distributing the land among the seven tribes and emphasizes the need for them to take initiative and possess their inheritances. The passage also encourages believers to actively pursue God’s promises, trust in His provision, and complete the tasks He has given us on our journey of faith.
