Joshua 18:26
And Mizpeh, and Chephirah, and Mozah,
Joshua 18:26 (KJV)
Context
Joshua 18 records the division of the remaining land of Canaan among the tribes of Israel. The land was assigned by lot, and each tribe received its inheritance. This verse lists three cities belonging to the tribe of Benjamin: Mizpeh, Chephirah, and Mozah.
Meaning
Mizpeh, meaning “watchtower,” was a city in Benjamin’s territory near Jerusalem. It later served as a gathering place for Israel, as seen in Judges 20:1 and 1 Samuel 10:17. Chephirah was one of the Gibeonite cities (Joshua 9:17) and was repopulated after the exile (Ezra 2:25; Nehemiah 7:29). Mozah appears only here in the Old Testament, and its exact location remains unknown.
Biblical connections
The listing of these towns shows the fulfillment of God’s promise to give each tribe its portion of the Promised Land. The careful record of even obscure places demonstrates that God is a God of order and detail. He cares for the specific circumstances of His people, and no place or person is insignificant in His redemptive plan. This truth echoes the covenant made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
Application
This verse encourages believers to recognize and appreciate the blessings God grants, even those that seem small or ordinary. It also urges us to seek God’s guidance and trust that He will lead us into places of blessing and fulfillment, just as He led Israel. Remember that God’s provision often comes in quiet, unremarkable ways.
Reflection
God’s faithfulness in giving the land to Israel points to a greater inheritance. Through Christ, believers receive an eternal inheritance, secured by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:11-14). This verse reminds us that God keeps His covenant promises, and we can rest in His faithful provision. Even the smallest details of our lives are held in His care.
