Joshua 19:51

Listen to this article

These are the inheritances which Eleazar the Priest, and Ioshua the sonne of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, diuided for an inheritance by lot, in Shiloh before the Lord, at the doore of the Tabernacle of the Congregation: so they made an end of diuiding the countrey. Joshua 19:51 (KJV)

The tabernacle was the central place of worship and the dwelling place of God’s presence among the Israelites during their wilderness journey. That the land division took place at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation underscores the significance of seeking God’s guidance and approval in the allocation of the land.

Casting lots was a common ancient practice for discerning God’s will. The Israelites trusted the Lord’s sovereign control over the process of land distribution. Proverbs 16:33 says, “The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD.” This method ensured that the distribution was fair and impartial, removing potential disputes or favoritism.

The verse concludes by stating that they made an end of dividing the country, indicating that the distribution among the tribes was successfully completed according to God’s plan. The allocation marked the fulfillment of the promise made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to give their descendants a land of their own.

Joshua 19:51 teaches several spiritual lessons. First, it reminds believers of the importance of seeking God’s guidance in major decisions, just as the Israelites relied on casting lots at the tabernacle. Second, the concept of inheritance highlights the blessings and responsibilities we have as children of God—our spiritual inheritance in Christ includes salvation, eternal life, and the Holy Spirit, which we are called to steward faithfully. Finally, the completion of the land division points to God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises; as He fulfilled the promise of land to Israel, we can trust that He will fulfill His promises to us.
