Joshua 19:49
When they had made an end of dividing the land for inheritance by their coasts, the children of Israel gave an inheritance to Joshua the son of Nun among them:
Joshua 19:49 (KJV)
Context
Joshua 19 records the division of Canaan among the tribes of Israel. This verse marks the end of that process. After every tribe received its portion, the people gave an inheritance to Joshua himself. The distribution took place in Shiloh, where the tabernacle stood, and the leaders oversaw the lots before the LORD (Joshua 19:51). The orderly procedure shows that God directed the inheritance.
Meaning
The phrase “among them” is significant. Joshua did not stand above the people as a ruler with special privileges. He received his share as a member of the covenant community. He waited until all the tribes were settled before asking for his own portion. This reveals his humility and his care for the people. The inheritance he received was Timnath-serah in the hill country of Ephraim, which he asked for and built (Joshua 19:50). Even the leader who brought Israel into the land received his portion only after the others were provided for.
Biblical connections
God had promised the land to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The division of Canaan fulfilled that promise. Joshua, as the leader who brought Israel into the land, also received a portion. This shows that leaders are not outside God’s provision; they share in the same promise and the same community. The act of giving Joshua an inheritance recognized his faithful service to God and the people. The process, done by lot in the presence of the LORD, confirms that God directed the inheritance.
Application
This verse teaches us to honour faithful leaders. The Israelites recognized Joshua’s service and gave him a lasting gift. We should also show gratitude to those who serve God’s people, through words, support, or practical help. The verse also reminds us to trust God’s promises. Just as God gave the land to Israel, He is faithful to provide for His people today. We can rely on His guidance and timing. When we give to others, we reflect God’s own generosity.
Reflection
Joshua’s example challenges us to serve without seeking personal gain. He led Israel for many years, yet he did not take advantage of his position. He received his inheritance only after the tribes were settled. This teaches us to put others first and to trust God to provide for our needs. It also reminds us that every believer, including leaders, shares in the same promises of God. We are all part of one community, and God cares for each of us. His provision comes in His time, and we can wait with patience.
