Joshua 19:47
And the coast of the children of Dan went out too little for them: therefore the children of Dan went vp to fight against Leshem, and tooke it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and possessed it, and dwelt therein, and called Leshem, Dan, after the name of Dan their father. Joshua 19:47 (KJV)
Joshua 19 records the division of the land of Canaan among the tribes of Israel, each receiving an inheritance from God. Verse 47 highlights the situation of the tribe of Dan: the coast allotted to them was too small for their needs. The fuller narrative of Dan’s conquest of Leshem is recorded later in Judges 18, not within the brief statement of Joshua.
The verse begins by noting an inadequate inheritance—the territory given to Dan proved insufficient. This shortfall created a challenge and an opportunity for the tribe to seek additional land.
Faced with this limitation, the children of Dan took decisive initiative. They went up to fight against Leshem, demonstrating determination and a willingness to act rather than remain content with an unsatisfactory allotment.
Their effort resulted in victory. They smote Leshem with the edge of the sword, possessed the city, and dwelt therein. Through their action they expanded their territory and secured the land they desired.
After the conquest, the Danites renamed the city Dan, honoring their ancestor Dan, the son of Jacob. This renaming signified ownership, identity, and a celebration of their heritage.
The passage teaches several enduring lessons. It urges initiative and perseverance, encouraging believers to take proactive steps when circumstances demand. It underscores trusting in God’s provision, showing that reliance on His promises can accompany bold action. It reminds us to view challenges as opportunities for growth and to make the most of them. Finally, it highlights the importance of honoring our heritage, recognizing the value of ancestral identity in shaping our present faith journey.
