Joshua 21:23

Listen to this article

And out of the tribe of Dan, Eltekeh with her suburbs, Gibethon with her suburbs, Joshua 21:23 (KJV)

Context: The book of Joshua is part of the historical books of the Old Testament. It recounts the story of the Israelites’ conquest and division of the Promised Land under the leadership of Joshua, following the death of Moses. Joshua 21 is specifically focused on the allocation of cities to the Levites, who were the designated priestly tribe responsible for the worship and spiritual affairs of Israel.

The Tribe of Dan: In this verse, we see the cities assigned to the Levites from the territory of the tribe of Dan. However, it’s important to note that Eltekeh and Gibbethon were actually allocated to the Levites rather than the tribe of Dan. The tribe of Dan received a territory that included Eltekeh and Gibbethon among many other cities, as described in Joshua 19:40-48. These cities were later allocated to the Levites as part of their inheritance.

Eltekeh: Eltekeh was a city located in the territory given to the Levites. It is mentioned elsewhere in the Bible, such as in Joshua 19:44 and 2 Kings 14:25. Notable events associated with Eltekeh include the defeat of the Philistines by King Amaziah of Judah during the reign of Jeroboam II.

Gibbethon: Gibbethon was another city assigned to the Levites. It is also mentioned in 1 Kings 15:27 and 16:15-18. During King Nadab of Israel’s reign, Gibbethon was a Philistine city that the Israelites were besieging. This city became significant when it was captured by the Philistines during the reign of King Nadab of Israel. Later, it was recaptured by King Baasha of Israel.

Eltekeh is mentioned in Joshua 19:44, Joshua 21:23, and 1 Chronicles 6:69.

Significance: This verse highlights the fulfilment of God’s promise to the Israelites to give them possession of the land. It specifically focuses on the allocation of cities to the Levites, ensuring that they have a place to settle and establish their inheritance. The significance of this verse lies in the fulfillment of God’s promise to provide the Israelites with land, and the specific allocation of cities to the Levites from the tribal territories.
