Joshua 23:3

And ye have seen all that the Lord your God hath done unto all these nations because of you; for the Lord your God is he that hath fought for you.

Joshua 23:3 (KJV)

Joshua spoke these words near the end of his life, after the people had entered the Promised Land. He gathered the elders, leaders, judges, and officers of Israel to give them his final instructions. The conquest of Canaan was largely complete, but several nations still remained in the land. Joshua reminded the people of what they had seen with their own eyes, so that they would remember God’s faithfulness and continue to obey Him.

The verse begins with “ye have seen.” The people were eyewitnesses of God’s mighty acts. They did not hear about these events from a distance; they watched them happen. Joshua then says that God did all this “because of you.” This phrase means that God acted on Israel’s behalf, driving out the nations to make room for His people. The victories were not earned by Israel’s strength or skill. Joshua makes this clear by saying, “the LORD your God is he that hath fought for you.” God Himself was the warrior who won the battles. Joshua does not take credit for the victories, nor does he praise the people’s courage. He gives all glory to God, who fought for them. This complete dependence on divine power, not human merit, is the heart of the verse. The people’s firsthand experience made the evidence undeniable and their responsibility to respond in faithful obedience greater.

This verse echoes the promise God gave to Israel before they entered the land. In Deuteronomy 1:30, Moses told them that the Lord would fight for them, just as He had done in Egypt. Joshua’s words confirm that God kept that promise. The same truth appears later in the New Testament, where Paul writes that if God is for us, no one can stand against us (Romans 8:31). God’s past faithfulness becomes the foundation for present trust and future obedience.

  • Remember what God has done. Like Israel, we should look back at His works in our lives and give thanks.

  • Rely on God’s strength, not our own. When we face battles, we can trust that He fights for us.

  • Stay faithful to God. Joshua urged Israel to avoid alliances with the remaining nations; we must avoid compromises that pull us away from Him.

God’s past faithfulness is a sure reason to trust Him today. The same God who fought for Israel is our God. He has not changed. When we face difficulties, we can remember that He is able to fight for us. Our part is to obey Him and to give Him the glory for every victory.
