Judges 7:12

And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like grasshoppers for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand by the sea side for multitude.

Context

This verse stands in the middle of Gideon’s story. Israel had suffered under Midianite raids for seven years, so God called Gideon to deliver them. Gideon gathered an army of thirty-two thousand men, but God said that was too many. He wanted Israel to know that victory came from Him, not from their own strength. First, twenty-two thousand fearful men went home. Then God tested the remaining ten thousand at the water, keeping only three hundred who lapped water like dogs.

Meaning

Now Gideon sees the enemy camp. The Midianites, Amalekites, and other eastern peoples fill the valley. The comparison to grasshoppers and sand shows overwhelming numbers. Their camels alone were beyond counting. This picture is not meant to glorify the enemy. It shows how impossible the situation looked from a human point of view. God deliberately placed Gideon in this position so that the coming victory would clearly be His work.

Biblical connections

The same imagery appears in Judges 6:5, where the enemy came like locusts. This repetition stresses the ongoing threat. Yet God had already promised Gideon victory in Judges 7:7, saying He would save Israel by the three hundred men. The vast enemy host makes that promise seem absurd, but God’s word stands above human reasoning.

Application

Believers often face problems that look as countless as sand. This verse teaches that God’s power is not limited by our resources. He can work through a small group or a single faithful person. The key is obedience to His direction, even when His plan seems weak or foolish. Gideon’s example encourages trust in God’s promise rather than in visible strength.

Reflection

When we see overwhelming odds, we may feel afraid. But this scene reminds us that God sees the whole battle. He who numbered the sand can also number our enemies. Our part is to listen, obey, and leave the outcome to Him. The same God who gave Gideon victory is ready to help His people today.
