Judges 7:12

And the Midianites, and the Amalekites, and all the children of the East, lay along in the valley like grashoppers for multitude, and their camels were without number, as the sand by the Sea side for multitude. Judges 7:12 (KJV)

The passage is situated in the narrative of Gideon, one of Israel’s judges, whom God called to rescue the people from seven years of Midianite oppression. Gideon initially gathered a massive force of thirty‑two thousand men, but God declared the army too large for Him to deliver the Midianites into Israel’s hands. He instructed Gideon to let any fearful soldier return home; twenty‑two thousand left, leaving ten thousand.

God’s refining continued at the water. He told Gideon to bring the remaining men to the stream and observe how they drank. Those who cupped the water with their hands, like a dog lapping, were chosen; those who knelt to drink were dismissed. After this test only three hundred men remained, the very number God deemed sufficient for the coming battle.

Judges 7:12 then paints the scene of the enemy camp. The Midianites, the Amalekites, and all the children of the east were arrayed in the valley, their numbers compared to grasshoppers and their camels to the innumerable sand on the seashore. This vivid imagery underscores the overwhelming odds facing Gideon’s tiny force.

With the three hundred selected, Gideon divided them into three companies, each equipped with trumpets, empty pitchers, and torches concealed inside. At his signal the men blew the trumpets, shattered the pitchers, and brandished the torches, shouting, “The sword of the Lord and of Gideon!” The sudden clamor and flashing light threw the Midianite camp into chaos; the enemy turned on one another, and Israel achieved a decisive victory.

The account highlights that triumph does not rest on human strength or numbers but on God’s power and presence. It encourages believers to trust God’s guidance, to submit to His sovereign plans, and to recognize that He can work mightily through a seemingly insignificant group when He is at work.
